How to Sell Custom Map Prints on Etsy (and Actually Make Money)

If you already sell gifts on Etsy, custom map prints are a clean add-on: the buyer types an address, you send a file. No stock, no shipping tubes, no “sorry, that city isn’t in our catalog.”

This is written for people who run a shop — not for design hobbyists. Tool example used below: Just Map Print for Etsy sellers.

Multi-size custom map poster files for a digital listing

Why this can make money

Digital made-to-order maps have three operator advantages:

  1. COGS ≈ $0 per order once your design tool is paid for.
  2. Fulfillment is minutes, not days — if you can pin a place and export without redrawing in Illustrator.
  3. Repeatable SKUs — one production loop covers “Where We Met,” first home, wedding venue, city poster. Only the listing photos and personalization copy change.

The trap is treating every order like a custom commission. If each map takes an hour, the math dies. If each map takes ~10–15 minutes, it works.

Do the fee math before you list

Use net after Etsy, not the sticker price.

Rough cut (USD, ballpark — check your own fee screen):

Example AExample B
List price$14.00$22.00
Etsy fees (~10–13% + listing)≈ $1.70≈ $2.70
Net to you≈ $12.30≈ $19.30
File / print cost$0$0
Your time @ 12 min——

Shop Pass on Just Map Print is $179 / year for unlimited commercial exports. Break-even on tool cost alone:

Average net / orderOrders to cover $179
$12~15 / year
$15~12 / year
$19~10 / year

That’s fewer than two sales a month. Everything after that is contribution margin (minus your time).

A quiet but realistic year

Assume you average 4 digital map orders / week at ~$15 net:

  • 4 × 52 = 208 orders
  • 208 × $15 ≈ $3,120 gross contribution
  • Minus $179 tool ≈ $2,940
  • Time: 208 × 12 min ≈ 42 hours / year → about $70 / hour if you hit that pace

You will not hit 4/week on day one. The point of the table: the product is not “thin margin merchandise.” It’s high net per minute if production is fast.

Price in the teens for a single personalized digital download is common; sets (couple + first home, or multi-size “print shop pack” messaging) can sit higher. Test one price, watch conversion for two weeks, then move $2–3 — don’t rebuild the whole shop.

What to sell first (one loop, several listings)

Start with gifts people already buy for a date and a place:

Same maker, different titles and mockups. One shop can run all four without four different production systems.

Listing setup (ops checklist)

Listing type: made-to-order digital — not instant download — whenever the buyer sends an address. Instant download is for a fixed file everyone gets.

Personalization box (paste and keep):

Please include:
1) Exact address or place name
2) Names / city label on the print
3) Date (optional)
4) Short caption (optional) — e.g. Where we met
5) Preferred frame size if they already own a frame

Delivery note in the description:

This is a MADE-TO-ORDER digital download. After purchase you get a
high-resolution ZIP (PNG + PDF, multiple print sizes). No physical
item ships. Usually same day after we confirm your details.

Map data credit (required for OpenStreetMap-based designs):

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). Design by [Your Shop].

Photos: framed room shots + one graphic that shows “what’s in the ZIP.” Practice exports on the seller maker.

Same-day fulfillment (the loop that protects margin)

  1. Read the personalization note; message once if the address is vague.
  2. Drop the pin, set text, check crop in the live preview.
  3. Optional: send a screenshot proof if your listing promises approval.
  4. Export PNG + PDF sizes (commercial unlock: Shop Pass).
  5. Zip into one archive (Etsy digital orders allow only a few files).
  6. Upload ZIP → complete digital delivery.

Sizes: US & UK/EU print size guide. Full seller SOP: map print for Etsy.

If this loop stretches past ~20 minutes because you’re redrawing maps by hand, fix the tool — don’t “work harder.” Margin lives in minutes.

License (one sentence, then move on)

Shop resale needs a commercial / shop unlock. On Just Map Print, Gift and Studio are not for catalog shops; Shop Pass is. Keep the OSM credit on every listing. Details and copy-paste: seller page — attribution.

Mistakes that kill profit

  • Instant download for address-specific work → refunds and bad reviews
  • Promising 48-hour custom art while still designing from scratch
  • Uploading eight loose files instead of one ZIP
  • Pricing at $8 “to get reviews” when fees leave you ~$6 for 20 minutes of work
  • Buying a year of Shop Pass with zero listings live — list first, unlock when the first order is real (or when you’re ready to batch mockups)

Next step

Open one preset, fulfill a fake order end-to-end (pin → export → zip), then publish one listing.

Seller hub + maker · Shop Pass pricing · Also shipping physical? → Amazon / POD profit notes

Run the math on your own shop
